Ep. 237 - Reviewing 'The Bikeriders' and Our Top 5 Hangout Movies
On episode 237 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributor Karen Peterson to discuss the latest film from Jeff Nichols, The Bikeriders, and talk about their Top 5 Hang Out Movies.

Before getting into this week’s topics, Ryan and Karen give a little update to the AW Summer Box Office Game as we are about to head into the month of July. For most of summer, Team Erik held a healthy lead in the friendly competition but things have changed with the entrance of Pixar’s Inside Out 2. With Despicable Me 4, Deadpool and Wolverine, and each teams “bomb pick” still in play, the game looks to still have plenty of twists and turns that we will keep you updated on throughout the upcoming weeks.

Transitioning to the main discussion, Jeff Nichols returns to theaters with his first film in eight years, The Bikeriders. Following a gang of bikers in the 1960s in Illinois, the film has been considered on the best releases of the year so far, but our two podcasters were left impressed that others and explained their thoughts as to way Nichols’ latest effort felt half baked. Once they gave their thoughts on The Bikeriders, they used this new release as a chance to do a Top 5 over their favorite “hang out” movies, stories where the plot takes a back seat to a group of characters and their usually fun, vibrant interactions. During their Top 5, some of the films discussed during this conversation included Empire Records, Almost Famous, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Lost in Translation, American Graffiti, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Everybody Wants Some, A Hard Day’s Night, and more.

You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more.

This podcast runs 1h46m. We will be back next week to talk about Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film, Kinds of Kindness, and discuss our Top 5 Westerns inspired by the release of Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter One. Till then, let’s get into it.

Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

One of Tarantino’s moms boyfriends (who was black and like a step-dad to Tarantino) would tell him that story about The Moors conquering Sicily all the time. It’s the reason it’s in the movie.

The way you guys interrupt each other is infuriating as a listener. I really would like to have known what Joseph Kosinski said in that interview. Anyway, I do enjoy the show overall, and I love me some Tony Scott. We live in a lesser world now that he’s gone.

Watched a couple interviews with this actor. He is so thoughtful and authentic in his answers. I like that he says things carefully and simply doesn’t blurt out shallow or superfluous remarks. Definitely a gentlemen in group interviews. Watched him in,” The Idea of You”, and loved his singing voice. So gifted!

I so love the side characters and would love to see their stories, as envisioned by Casey and brought to the screen by Matthew. Start with Amy. Even have a redemption arc for Miguel, where we see him hurt by Alex's rejection - even though he was partially responsible - but eventually meets his love, too (the waiter in the cake scene?) (Stunned by how inclusion the whole movie is, with staff, etc. so non-traditional. And how natural it felt, even to the point that many people probably haven't noticed it.)

This by far is one of his best interview to date. He was so articulate and honest about his feelings and the way he put it forward was very inspiring. I loved how he passionately spoke about Latino community and its representation on tv. Now that he spoke a little bit about his own production company I can’t wait to see what he is going to bring to the table. I’ve no doubt it’s going to be amazing and wonderful just like he is. Also I wanna say thank you to the interviewer for asking really good questions. Taylor did a fantastic job of answering each of them with sheer clarity and accuracy ❤

Let’s be honest, this movie was given an R rating because it was a queer love story. We have all seen movies with much more graphic sex scenes showing more nudity that were rated PG-13 because it was a straight couple. The love story was beautiful in this movie and the characters were wonderful but because they’re queer, we can’t let teens see it. The hypocrisy makes me crazy.

It’s a shame because in the uk it was given a 12 so not even PG was needed. I think the US is more conservative and close minded in things like this. The love scenes were beautiful and beautifully shot

So what does the line about the difference between rugby and football? It would make sense if Alex was talking about British football, what we call soccer, as there is so much physical contact in rugby and very little in soccer. But Alex being American, I would think, would call it soccer. (Although the way Alex says it, the meaning is more in the way he says it and not so much what he says.) And when Alex and Nora are talking after the New Year eve party (a month later), while they are talking, another staffer comes in without knocking and then looks embarrassed interrupting their private discussion. Wonder why that was in there. PS - like so many others, completely obsessed with the movie - in a good way.
